de Young Museum
Located near 10th Avenue and Fulton Street in Golden Gate Park, the de Young Museum is San Francisco's oldest public museum.  The collection of American art includes over 200 paintings spanning the nation's history and geography. de Young also exhibits collections of from other cultures including Africa, Mesoamerica, Oceania, and American folk art. Admission is free on the first Wednesday of the month.

Legion of Honor
The Legion of Honor  is located near 34th Avenue and Clement Street in Lincoln Park.  The Legion of Honor contains paintings and sculpture of European and ancient art and also hosts travelling exhibitions.  Admission is free on the second Wednesday of each month.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
The SFMOMA is located at 151 Third Street in the South of Market Area. This museum's exhibitions of modern art are housed in a building that is a work of art in itself. The exhibitions feature both local works and artists of international recognition. The admission is free on the first Tuesday of every month.

San Francisco Maritime Museum
Located at the west end of Fisherman's Wharf , the San Francisco Maritime Museum chronicles seagoing history of local relevance. Exhibitions cover changes in naval technology and historical seafaring events.

Museum of Craft and Folk Art
Located in the Fort Mason Center near the Marina district, this museum exhibits a folk art from a wide variety of origins.  The works of art vary from modern to historical and from American to Papua New Guinea.  General admission is free on the first Wednesday of each month.
